Tareh Chronicles: King’s Promise
***** (5 stars)
I personally think that “The Tareh Chronicles: King’s Promise” by Michael Stott is one of those rare books that will appeal to fantasy and non-fantasy fans alike (like how everyone loves “Star Wars” even if you aren’t a science fiction geek). It just tells a darn good story and comes at you from so many different angles you don’t even know what hits you…. Stott demonstrates considerable talent for penning a believable fantasy that almost anyone who reads it will connect to on some level as it has so many relatable themes and messages throughout that speak to a larger audience. It has a good, positive message of good fighting against evil and tyranny, and the struggle for survival, leaning and supporting on another, learning from people different than you, danger, great detailed action, intrigue, and fantastic characters and amazing energy! I chuckled at several points, and practically cried at others. I think the author is highly creative and has beautiful, passionate narration skills and can deliver the emotional payoff when it really matters. So even if you aren’t a die-hard fantasy fan, give it a try – you won’t be disappointed. Ready for the next one ASAP! Recommend for ages 15+. Although not my normal cup of tea, “The Tareh Chronicles: King’s Promise” delivers on all the things I like in a book – great writing, vivid, atmospheric scenery that transports me to another time and place, characters I can connect to on some level and really root for, and plots that are complex enough to challenge me and make me think, but not so convoluted so that I need to be taking notes as I go along (although I do admit to losing track of some characters from time to time…). I had the main ones figured out, but some of the lesser supporting ones felt a bit like ‘names’ at some points. This is a long and action/story-packed book where so much happens, and there are so many cool characters and settings, it’s hard to describe, you just have to experience it for yourself. I loved that the story is shown to us through several different characters’ perspectives (written in 3rd person omniscient) … had a great lesson about learning from others, being ‘outsiders’ and fitting in, learning from other cultures, teamwork, etc… overall was a terrific ride and I was happy with the ending… really can’t wait to see what happens with the next books!

The book has an amazing storyline that would reach out to any kid. It’s easy to follow, yet really shows you what primitive living was like.
The characters are all well thought out and you seem to connect to them well— almost as if you were right there!
I quite enjoy survival books and even though I’m not a big reader, I was still on the edge of my seat with this book and couldn’t stop reading!
